How did you arrive at FBC?

I came to FBC in February 2016 after serving at Central Baptist Church in Jacksonville, TX. We didn’t know we were coming to Midland, but we’re sure glad we’re here now!

Tell us about your family.

I’m privileged to be married to my best friend, Julie since May 6, 2000. Julie is an amazing lady! She is a freelance writer, a pianist and extraordinary wife and mother! Our son, Josh, is the light of our lives! We adopted him on the day he was born in 2011.

Other than the Bible, what’s your favorite book?

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Any book written by Henry Cloud.

What’s your favorite vacation spot?

San Diego! Although we’ve only been there once, we LOVED it! The weather is perfect, wonderful city and lots of places to play golf!

What do you do for fun?

I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, golf, fitness training and LEGOS! Yes, I buy them for my own use, not just my son!

What is the best thing about FBC?

When we came to FBC, we were overwhelmed with the kindness and warmth of the people! A former pastor told me when I came, “This is the most New Testament church you’re going to find.” I believe he was right!

I’ve had the chance to experience that first-hand. In February 2017, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Type B Stage 4. Julie and I were devastated. Although 7 out of 10 get over this type of cancer, I’ve always been exceptional. I feared I might be one of the 3. Our church wrapped their arms of love around us and walked with us through the cancer treatments. Six doses of chemo, more scans than I count, lots of patience on their part as I was too weak to do much of anything – our church stood beside us with grace and kindness. When I was declared cancer free, I announced it to our church family and we – as a family – celebrated it together.

What’s the best thing about what you do?

The best part of what I do is getting to serve people! In John 10:10, Jesus made it clear that he came for PEOPLE, not tasks. He came to serve as their Shepherd – a shepherd who loves sacrificially, selflessly and passionately. What I seek in my journey as a pastor is to do exactly the same as what Jesus sought. Make people the priority of life and center myself around serving as He did. It’s amazing to me how such a choice energizes me!

What would you say to someone to encourage them in their spiritual journey?

I’d begin with, “You need Jesus and a spiritual family.” Start with Jesus and build from there. No one can walk a spiritual journey alone. Jesus didn’t even try. He found connection not only with the Holy Spirit but with the disciples whom He invested time and His very life.

Next, I’d say, “You need the Word of Life.” The Bible is God’s love letter to humanity and yet many of us treat it very casually, reading it only at church or maybe at a Bible study. Drink deeply from it and find what you need for daily life.

Finally, I’d say, “You need a mission.” If all you do is take IN, you’ll never fulfill your purpose for giving OUT! God has called us and equipped us for service! When we DON’T serve, we find ourselves frustrated and disillusioned. That’s because we were MADE to serve. The best place to find that place of service is within the loving confines of a spiritual family – like FBC!
